Yoga Journal Review

Yoga, with Deborah Burkman.
Shadywood Road Productions & burkmanyoga.com

K. Pattabhi Jois's Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is highly active and can seem unapproachable to some beginners. Somehow, San Francisco teacher Deborah Burkman makes it all a little less intimidating while maintaining the practice's vigor.

Burkman begins with a long warm up sequence that includes a challenging series of abdominal strengtheners, followed by the familiar Sun Salutation A and a modified B version, which inserts Utkatasana (Chair Pose) and Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose) into the mix. A series of familiar standing poses come next, along with several back bends in preparation for Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward Bow Pose). The practice closes with sitting twist, forward bends, and relaxation. Burkman also provides a six minute educational section in which she briefly shares handy performance hints for many poses. Burkman's quiet but direct style of teaching inspires confidence and encourages concentration on the work at hand.
